First Impressions

Organic Mayan opens with a clean, pleasant sharpness, then a light nuttiness comes through in the middle of the sip. A chocolate note stays after you swallow and leaves the cup a little sweet.

For a medium-dark roast, we found very little bitterness.

The aroma is inviting but mild. It will not fill the room while it brews.

What’s in the Blend

Jose’s Gourmet Coffee roasts Organic Mayan to a medium-dark profile from 100% Arabica beans. Stellar Certification Services certifies the beans as USDA organic, and the coffee is Kosher certified and roasted and packed in the USA.

Jose’s describes the blend as having a delicate, floral aroma, a sweet, chocolaty taste and a full body with a smooth finish. The chocolate matches what we tasted. Neither Jose’s nor Costco names the countries the beans come from, and Jose’s does not publish roast or body scores.

Drawbacks

  • It is hard to find outside Costco. Jose’s sells its coffee only through Costco, and the range varies by warehouse.
  • We found no current Amazon listing for this blend, so there is no easy way to compare prices outside Costco.
  • The Costco.com pack is two 2.5 lb bags. That is 5 lb of whole bean coffee at once, so keep the second bag sealed.
  • The aroma is subtle. If you want a coffee whose smell fills the kitchen, look elsewhere.

Who It Is For

Organic Mayan suits people who want a smooth, medium-dark cup with a chocolate finish from certified organic beans. The 5 lb Costco pack fits an office or a household that goes through coffee fast.

Organic Mayan is one of several Costco coffees we have tried. See our pick of the best coffee at Costco, updated as the stock changes with the seasons.

How to Brew It

Jose’s publishes no brew guide for Organic Mayan, so match the grind to your brewer.
